The Self-Assessment Essay
My writing has grown over the semester, but in certain aspects, I believe it has remained steady. As an immigrant with an English level and a writing style that isn’t fluent, I believed that this class would be a good opportunity to improve my writing style and be better at constructing and evaluating essays. In many ways, I believe I’ve achieved this goal because there has been a significant improvement in my growth and engagement in the general element of writing.
One of the ways I’ve progressed this semester is in my ability to develop and articulate a stance in my writing. In our essays in this class, I always focus on making sure that in my thesis I pick a side and always outline my main argument. One example of a thesis I wrote which was about how the media shape public perception is “ The media has a significant impact on forming public perceptions through deliberate language, powerful metaphors, famous individuals, and historical relevance. So, to comprehend the world through the media, it is imperative for individuals to actively engage with content, question framing, and language, and seek diverse perspectives, thereby contributing to a more informed and empathic society in today’s digital age. “ With this, I’ve gotten positive feedback from the professor and my classmates on how precise and direct my thesis is. However, the professor wasn’t satisfied with my paragraph-to-paragraph transition. With the research essay, I’ve worked hard to make my paragraph-to-paragraph transition smoother.
Another way I have progressed in this class throughout the semester is I’m able to use the CUNY library because at the beginning of the semester i was very lost within the cuny library. When I started the first essays of the class i didn’t know how to get a source from the cuny library even after library administrator gave us a whole presentation on how to utilize it and get comfortable with the cuny library. However, now after getting numerous sources from the CUNY library site, I have become super familiar with it.
Another method I’ve improved in this lesson is by strengthening and supporting my source. I’ve established excellent methods for supporting and analyzing my evidence. When I give numerous pieces of evidence in a single essay, I make care to synthesize them and make them link to one another. In the Exploratory essay, the professor gave me some useful feedback on how strong my analysis was.
Active reading, organizing ideas coherently during drafting, seeking feedback and thoughtful revisions with classmates, carefully editing for clarity and correctness, and engaging in reflective self-assessment to continually refine writing skills have all helped me to improve reading, drafting, revising, editing, and self-assessment strategies in this class throughout the semester.
This class also helps me negotiate personal writing goals by providing structured guidance, constructive feedback, and exposure to a variety of writing styles, building a deeper understanding of academic writing conventions, and assisting me in distinguishing between formal essay writing and casual writing like text messaging.
This class encourages collaborative and social engagement in the writing process throughout the semester by giving us, the students, opportunities to exchange ideas, peer review, receive constructive feedback, and collectively explore diverse perspectives, which enhances our overall writing and communication skills.
When it came to engaging in genre analysis and multimodal composing to explore effective writing across disciplinary contexts and beyond, I didn’t improve much in some areas because I sometimes neglected active participation in class discussions, felt anxious to collaborate with peers, and failed to have more in-class writing in which we practice genre analysis and multimodal composing.
Furthermore, this class is critical in developing awareness of individual and communal language variations as valued sources, therefore establishing an inclusive atmosphere that fosters cultural understanding. I gain a sophisticated rhetorical sensibility through careful research and application of multiple language resources, boosting my ability to communicate effectively and adapt to various rhetorical contexts.
Overall, I’d like to thank our professor for an exciting semester that has substantially improved my writing abilities. Their advice and critical criticism have helped shape my abilities to explain clear positions, enhance transitions, and handle research successfully. I am grateful for the encouragement and useful insights that have greatly aided my development as a writer, making this semester a genuinely wonderful learning experience.
